Mary and Martha
"And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Luke 10: 38-42In other words, instead of running around like a blue-arsed fly trying to serve people, Mary was focused on receiving spiritual nourishment, which is more important. The Bible doesn't say whether Martha continued serving her guests on her own or whether she went to listen to Jesus. I bet she continued faffing around while giving Mary filthy looks.
Mary and Martha represent two types of consciousness: being and doing. The world is full of Marthas. Marthas like to do. "What do you do for a living?" is the first question Marthas ask when you are first introduced. Even when Marthas get on the spiritual path they end up doing the path. Marthas come up with lots of techniques to be. They try hard to understand a teaching or truth so they can do it.
Marys realise that the universe is an expression of being. Marys know that there is nothing to do but be who you are. Love is being; Peace is being; Truth is being. Therefore, when you realise you are Love, you let Love be. When you realise you are Peace, you let Peace be. When you realise you are Truth, you let Truth be. While Marys still live in the world and appear to be doing normal things, they are being the experience. In other words, they allow the universe to express or be.
Now Marthas and Marys don't get on particularly well. If the truth be told, Marthas find Marys very annoying.
"Do something!" Martha shouts in frustration.
Mary simply smiles and says nothing knowing full well that all is well because the universe is.
It's funny how there are all these Marthas trying to change the world. Marthas are trying to impose their ideas of doing on Marys and expecting Marys to dance to their tune. Little do Marthas realise that their doing mean nothing. It is Marys, walking with the awareness that Love is, who have any real impact. And yet to Marthas, Marys appear to be doing sod-all.
In truth, there are no Marthas; there are only Marys dreaming they are Marthas.
All is Mary.
